The youth vote

One of the neat things about voting is getting to take your kids into the booth with you, as my wife and I did this morning. What a great way to introduce them at an early age to this important pleasure, duty, right and privilege.

Niko and Lena are 7, and Gregory is almost 4. We had not discussed politics with them, but they knew their minds. Gregory and Lena were firmly for Barack Obama. Lena said, “He has brown skin and we need someone with brown skin, we can’t always have someone with light skin as President.” Niko was solidly behind John McCain because “he’s a cool guy. He’ll be nice to everyone and invite us to his palace.”

The three of them crowded around while Mom voted. They got to slide the completed ballot into the machine, and each received an “I voted” sticker, which they proudly wore.

Then it was off to Krispy Kreme for free doughnuts – the real reason for voting!
